Our first snow storm

The view of Avenue B from our window

Today is the first snow storm we've seen in NY. It actually started coming through last night and was trying to snow when I met James in Chinatown to pick up the mussels for our Valentines Day dinner. Over night it continued to snow (we have about 1 1/2 to 2 inches) but this morning it has changed to what I think is "freezing rain". It looks like it's pouring with rain but the "rain" is actually tiny bits of ice, like small pieces of hail about the size of sugar grains.

The snow is fabulous but can you believe it is the "wrong" type of snow for making snowmen and snowballs??? Had no idea there was a right and wrong type of snow but the stuff that has fallen is very light and fluffy and doesn't stick together at all :( Can you believe it? Our first decent snow fall and it's the wrong kind!!! Still, it's lovely to walk in because it's so fluffy. If only people would stop putting salt down because all that does is turn the snow into slippery slush that feels like walking in quicksand - it feels like your shoes will be sucked right off your feet!

This afternon they are predicting "thunder snow". Never heard of that before, but John, the new Canadian at my work and resident snow expert has sent me a link all about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thundersnow

Apparently, it is like a thunder storm, but instead of rain falling there is snow. Also, the snow muffles the sound of the thunder so you can't hear it from as far away.

Here are some more snow pictures:
