A postcard from Prague

James on Charles Bridge in Prague

We spent the the weekend in Prague - left on Friday after work and came back on Sunday night. It was a great city; lots of old, really interesting buildings, fantasic churches and very, very cheap beer (half the price of a Coke and cheaper than water!). We stayed at a little hotel near Prague Castle. It was actually a really good location - walking distance to Prague Castle and very close to where the airport bus drops you off and picks you up and to the metro station to get into town. We spent our first day wandering around the Castle grounds (it's the biggest enclosed Castle complex in the world) and the afternoon exploring Mala Strana where St Nicholas Church is. In fact we almost didn't go into the church at all becasue its so plain from the outside. But inside it was stunning. We had dinner in a pub/restaurant recommended by Fodor's guides - a place that was done up to look like a brewery, with lots of copper pipes and sections of the big copper brewing containers. Dinner was lots of red meat, gravy and dumplings. And beer. The next day we spent wandering around old town and new town, drinking hot chocolate (which was like a mug of pure melted chocolate) and drinking yet more beer.

On the way to Prague Castle - a bit of snow!
